The Barnyard Shopping Center, Carmel Valley, California

This image shows a couple of the unusual buildings used to house the shopping center known as The Barnyard at the mouth of the Carmel Valley in California.

The description states:
THE BARNYARD — CARMEL, CA
Consists of seven restaurants with outdoor dining, fifty shops and craft studios, a live theatre and a two hour photo finishing service. Located off Hwy. 1 between Carmel Valley Rd. and Rio Road. Enter from Carmel Rancho Blvd. Tel. (408)624-8886.
–The center was built in 1976 and is still there in this form, but the buildings have all been painted instead of being allowed to show their age as grey wood buildings. The theatre is gone as is the photo finishing service, and just about every business has been replaced with others.
This card was used and is dated 23 June 1979

Beauvoir Lagoon, Biloxi, Mississippi

LAGOON AT BEAUVOIR, JEFFERSON DAVIS SHRINE, BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI
…was an oyster bayou before the Gulf Coast Seawall was built and closed if off from the Mississippi Sound.
–The Gulf Coast Seawall was built along much of the Mississippi coastline to stabilize beaches and shorelines from erosion and subsidence.
This card was used and is dated 9 May 1964.

Gulf Coast Fishing Boats and Harbor

GULF COAST FISHING BOATS
The fishing industry occupies an important part in the economic life of the Coast. The combination of nets, bright colors and blue sky offer an endless variety of picturesque scenes.
–The location is not specified, but the message on the back of the card implies it is Mobile, Alabama.
This card was used and is dated 2 August 1971.

Texas Longhorn Cattle in the Field

This image shows a few longhorn cattle as they appear while grazing in a pasture.

The description states simply: Longhorn Steers
–The steer is a bull which has had its testicles removed to reduce aggressiveness. Both steers and cows tend to have longer horns than bulls.
This card was used and is from the 1950s. 
 

Garner State Park Entrance, Texas

This image shows the pillars and gates that mark the entrance to Garner State Park in Concan Texas.

–In 1976 the parks size more than doubled when an additional 760 acres were added.

INDIAN BURIAL GROUND AT EKLUTNA ON THE PALMER — ANCHORAGE HIGHWAY, ALASKA
These colorful miniature houses were erected on the graves of Alaskan Indians and in them were placed some of their most precious possessions.
–Such practices are often the result of melding of two different cultural traditions in unique ways when religious conversions take place in societies with well developed and complex religious rituals.
This card was used and is dated 28 August 1969.

This image shows the Polynesian Cultural Center theme park and living museum located on the north shore of the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

POLYNESIAN CULTURAL CENTER, LAIE, OAHU
This aerial photograph also shows a portion of the Church College of Hawaii’s campus and athletic fields.
–The facility was opened in 1973 and is operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). The Church College has been renamed Brigham Young University – Hawaii.
This card was used and is dated 11 September 1973.

MOANA HOTEL’S world famous Banyan Court Lanai
–The banyan court refers to the banyan tree planted in the center a few years after the hotel was built in 1901. The area is now called the Surfrider’s Courtyard. The banyan tree is a protected landmark as well as the hotel itself.
This card was used and is dated 10 September 1968.

Honolulu and Diamond Head, Hawaii

This image is an aerial view of the world famous Waikiki Beach in the center midground, Diamond Head Volcano in the background, and the Ala Moana Shopping Center in the left foreground, along with a portion of the city of Honolulu.

–The last statement in Hawaiian translates to: The printing house Ala Moana center.
The Ala Moana Center is still a landmark in the city.
