Native American Dancers, Cherokee, North Carolina

This image shows a troupe of Native American dancers dressed and posed in dance posture. The dance is called the Eagle Dance. Cherokee, North Carolina is the headquarters of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation.

The description states:
“UNTO THESE HILLS”
Cherokee, North Carolina
The centuries-old colorful Cherokee Indian Eagle Dance is recreated on the outdoor drama. “Unto These Hills” will be presented nightly except Mondays, from late June through early September, at Mountainside Theatre, Cherokee, North Carolina.
–The performance of “Unto These Hills” continues to the present day and describes their history up to the deportation and Trail of Tears in 1838. The current version was first performed in 1950.

Parkview Motel, Nashville, Tennessee

This image is a view inside a typical room of the Parkview Motel just a few miles north of Nashville, Tennessee. Of particular note is the TV in the background which is on wheels, and is apparently turned on. The lamp on top of it would have to be off to watch programming, though.

–The odd capitalization is present in the original text. It appears the motel is no longer in business.

–This lake may be Kentucky Lake, a dammed portion of the Tennessee River to the east of Paris, Tennessee.

Roadside Rhododendrons, Tennessee

Cannon on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee

This is an image of an American Civil War era cannon situated on the edge of Lookout Mountain overlooking the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee on the far side of the river below.

–The cannon is a reminder of the Civil War era Battle of Lookout Mountain, fought here in 1863.

Ridges Sanctuary Range Lights, Door County, Wisconsin

This image shows two lighthouses known as the Bailey Harbor Range Lights, in the Ridges Sanctuary, located on the Lake Michigan coast of Wisconsin in Door County. Clicking on the image will give a larger version, which shows the second light more clearly in the far background among the trees.

The Ridges Sanctuary, north of Bailey’s Harbor, Door County, Wisconsin. A natural shrine for the preservation of native wild flowers and animals. Located here are the Range lights built in 1870 to guide ships into the harbor.
–There is a third component of the range lights, located approximately where the photographer was standing, which is a skeleton tower allowing ships to identify the location in less favorable lighting.
This postcard is dated 1962.

–Another view of this vessel is seen here. Such vessels were essential to moving residents and visitors along with supplies to some of the nearby inhabited islands. Some still operate, others have closed with the construction of bridges where economically practical or when islands were abandoned.
This card is dated 1961.

This image is of the famous Bavarian Inn, located in the town of Frankenmuth, Michigan, as it looked in the 1960s.

Frankenmuth family style chicken dinners are world-famous. In a town of only 1900, 6,000 dinners may be served in a single day.
Dining room, Coffee Shop, Stein room and Gift Shop. Located 15 miles south of Saginaw and 25 miles north of Flint. Get off the I-75 Expressway at the Birch Run-Frankenmuth  Exit (Northbound) on the Frankenmuth-Bridgeport  Exit (Southbound).
–Error is in the original text. The business has thrived and expanded to include lodging and other activities. This image is dated 1967.

International Bridge, Eagle Pass, Texas

This image shows the approach to the international crossing between Eagle Pass, Texas and Piedras Negras, Coahuila, In Mexico.

The description states:
INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE at Eagle Pass, Texas links two very favorite cities on the Mexico border. Thousands of American tourists cross here on their way to the interior of Mexico, while Mexican citizens visit the American side to shop at the many well-stocked stores in Eagle Pass. Peidras Negras is one of the prettiest Mexican towns on the border. The building in the background is the new American Customs Building.
–Eagle Pass is a small city, with a population of less than 30,000. Piedras Negras, in contrast, is estimated to be almost 140,000.
