This image shows the typical opening ceremony of the traditional bullfight, in this instance a parade of the various performers, including picadors, toreadors, and a matador.

The opening parade at the bullfight.
— The bullfight is often referred to as a sport, but it is more a ritual custom of Hispanic nations and cities, as there is no competition involved. While it is still practiced today, it has come under criticism for its harm to the bulls.
This postcard likely dates from the 1960s.

–The building identified as the Parish is better known as El Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, built in 1859. The Palace was likely the former government center, but there was a new government building erected in 1986.
This postcard was used and likely dates from the 1960s like the previous one.

This image shows a typical business street in the Mexican city of Piedras Negras, Mexico. It is located directly across the Rio Grande from the Texas city of Eagle Pass. The name means ‘black stones’.

Lover’s Point where the blue waters of the Pacific splash against the rocky and sandy shoreline covered with a red and pink carpet of wildflowers and ice plant.
–The ice plant is a very aggressive and hardy ground cover which adapts well to sand and dunes. Lover’s Point is not in fact visible in this photo, as will become apparent in the coming days postings.
This card likely dates from the 1960s.

–Harrison is noted for his modernization of the navy and the continued expansion of the National Park system.

Travelodge Motel, Indianapolis, Indiana

This is a typical promotional card from a motel of the time, in this case the Travelodge of Indianapolis, indiana. This particular establishment was called the Travelodge West, and was located on Washington Street.

97 fire-proof accommodations in the center of downtown Indianapolis. On U. S. 40, 52, 36, 421, and Indiana routes 37 and 67. Modern in every way, convenient to all downtown stores, theatres, churches and business buildings.

–The motel no longer exists, as the entire area has been rebuilt with a parking garage and county offices at this location. The blue car in the center of the image is a 1959 Chevrolet, indicating that this image does not predate that year. The card was used and is dated 15 June 1961.

Wingfoot Express, Bonneville Raceway, Utah

This image shows the record setting rocket car called “The Wingfoot Express“, which was driven by Tom Green to a new land speed record on October 2, 1964. The original driver, Walt Arfons, had suffered a heart attack the day before and could not drive.

Walt Arfons Wingfoot Express set a world land speed record of 413.20 miles per hour on the world’s famous Bonneville Salt Flats. Wendover Utah-Nevada. Tom Green, the driver.
–The record would be broken by Art Arfons in the same vehicle only three days later. This vehicle differed from most previous record holders in that the engine was a rocket motor, and did not provide power to the wheels.
