Mormon Tabernacle Organ and Choir, Salt Lake City, Utah

This image shows the same choir and organ during another session, with the women still set to either side of the men who take center stage. This time the women are all wearing identical white gowns, and the men are in black suits.

The description states:
The great organ in the Tabernacle is 30×33 feet, and 48 feet high, and has nearly 8000 pipes ringing from 5/8 of an inch to 32 feet in length, it has 110 stops. Daily week day free concerts are given at noon.
–This card was used and is dated 15 June 1956.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Organ, Salt Lake City, Utah

This image shows the first of a series of images featuring the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Organ. This shows the women of the choir dressed in variously colored formal gowns while the men wear tuxedos. The women are split to either side of the men in the center.

The description states:
“MORMON” TABERNACLE CHOIR AND ORGAN
TEMPLE SQUARE, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
With a membership of more than 375 voices the “Mormon” Tabernacle Choir — a voluntary organization — has been heard since 1929 with the Tabernacle Organ in nationwide weekly broadcasts. Visitors to Temple Square are invited to attend the Sunday morning broadcasts as well as the free organ recitals presented daily in the Tabernacle.
–It is not known what particular event prompted the choice of clothing, if any. This card was used, and is dated 27 July 1953.

Mormon Temple at Night, Salt Lake City, Utah

This last image of the Temple sequence presented over the past few days shows the Temple illuminated at night by lights both around and on the structure itself.

Located on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, the spired “Mormon” Temple dominates the historic grounds. Work on this graceful structure was begun in 1853 and after 40 years of sacrifice it was completed in 1893. By means of a system of floodlights the outside of the Temple is illuminated during the evening hours.

Mormon Temple at Dusk, Salt Lake City, Utah

This image is of the same Temple shown previously, but from a somewhat different angle, and near the time of sunset. The building and towers are illuminated in preparation for advancing night.

Behind the bronze and granite structure is the historic “Mormon” Temple in all its architectural beauty.

Mormon Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, Utah

This image shows the world famous Tabernacle building on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. While this building was long used as a meeting place and performance center for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, it has been at least partially replaced by the much larger and more recently built Conference Center.

Completed by the “Mormon” Pioneers in 1867, the world-famous Tabernacle on historic Temple Square has a seating capacity of 8,000 and houses on of the finest pipe organs in the world. Noted for it unique architecture and its exceptional acoustical qualities, it is used as a house of worship and for presentation of cultural concerts and nation-wide radio broadcasts.
–The choir still performs in this space after renovation in 2007. This building is also featured elsewhere on this blog.
This card likely dates from the 1950s.

Wingfoot Express, Bonneville Raceway, Utah

This image shows the record setting rocket car called “The Wingfoot Express“, which was driven by Tom Green to a new land speed record on October 2, 1964. The original driver, Walt Arfons, had suffered a heart attack the day before and could not drive.

The description states:
BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS
“WINGFOOT EXPRESS”
Walt Arfons Wingfoot Express set a world land speed record of 413.20 miles per hour on the world’s famous Bonneville Salt Flats. Wendover Utah-Nevada. Tom Green, the driver.
–The record would be broken by Art Arfons in the same vehicle only three days later. This vehicle differed from most previous record holders in that the engine was a rocket motor, and did not provide power to the wheels.

John Cobb and the Railton Mobil Special, Utah

This image shows John Cobb, the man who set the land speed record in the Railton Mobil Special.

The description states:
WENDOVER, UTAH
“Home of the Worlds Fastest Speedway”
John Cobb and race car, Railton Special set a worlds record Sept. 16th 1947. Two way overage 393.8 mi. per hr. on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Western Service, Motel and Cafe, Racing Headquarters, Wendover, Utah.
–The last line above indicates this card was produced for sale by the motel and cafe business. The car is correctly known as the Railton Mobil Special, as shown on the side of the car behind the driver. The Railton Special was an earlier version that set a previous speed record.
John Cobb died a few years later attempting to set the water speed record on Loch Ness.

Bonneville Speedway Garages, Utah

This image shows some temporary garages and shelters for groups hoping to race on the Bonneville Speedway.

Wendover, Utah-Nevada
View of a race car location, on the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats. To the northeast of Wendover the salt lies flat and hard and dry — the best surface for automobile racing ever discovered. The crystalline salt body that makes the famous Bonneville Lats Race Track covers an area of 200 square miles.
–This location is the site of recent land speed records set by wheel-driven and jet propelled vehicles. This card likely dates from the 1960s.

Bonneville Salt Flats Highway, Utah

This image shows U. S. Highway 40 as it passes through the Bonneville Salt Flats from Salt Lake City to Wendover, Utah.

The description states:
BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS
U. S. Highway 40 and 50 crosses this famous Bonneville Salt Flats “World’s Fastest Speedway” in the Western edge of Utah. Salt for commercial purposes is harvested annually.
–Because of concerns that the flats may be affected by salt mining, the flats are now flooded annually with water from the southern salt beds to provide additional smooth surfacing.
