South Burdick St., Kalamazoo, Michigan

This image shows a typical street scene in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the early 20th Century. The road is identified as South Burdick Street.
There is no description on the back of this card.
Since this is likely the old center of town, the road no longer exists in this state, as the north end of South Burdick St. was completely rebuilt as Kalamazoo Mall.
This postcard was used and is dated 20 February 1923, which is consistent with the automobiles  visible in the image.

National Music Camp, Interlochen, Michigan

This image is of the lake front portion of the National Music Camp located in Interlochen, Michigan, south of Traverse City.

There is no description on the back of this card.
There had been girls and boys camping at this location for decades before the music camp was established in 1928, becoming the National Music Camp in 1931 and affiliating with the University of Michigan in 1942. The camp is located on a parcel of land between two lakes, thus the name Interlochen. It is now known as the Interlochen Center for the Arts.
This post card was used and is dated 15 August 1951, but the image likely dates from the 1940s.

New Mississippi River Bridge, New Orleans, Louisiana

This image shows what was then known as the “New” Mississippi River Bridge, having been completed in 1958. It has since been renamed the Crescent City Connection, and now comprises two separate spans, each carrying traffic in one direction.

The new Mississippi River Bridge opened on April 15, 1958, measuring two and two tenths miles long with the roadway one hundred and seventy feet above the river. Costing $65,000,000 and has the longest cantilever span of any bridge in the U. S.
–Other estimates put the cost at $50 million, and it is now the fifth longest cantilever bridge in the world.
This postcard was used and is dated 26 November 1971, but is likely taken in the 1960s based on the styles of autos visible in the image.

Little White House, Warm Springs, Georgia

This image is of the historic location in Warm Springs, Georgia that came to be known as the Little White House from it construction and use by Franklin Roosevelt as a Presidential retreat.

The description states:
The Little White House at Warm Springs was President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Georgia home. The Paul’s Scarlet Climber roses were in bloom when he died in this house on April 12, 1945.
–Roosevelt was instrumental in establishing a polio treatment center at Warm Springs, and built this residence there to facilitate his frequent visits. While it was not widely known at the time, Roosevelt used this retreat as a way of spending time with his mistress, Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd.
This card likely dates from the 1950s.

The description states:
VIEW OF THE BASIN PARK HOTEL AND DOWNTOWN EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSAS
Built into the side of a mountain, this unique hotel has a ground-level exit from every floor. Eureka Springs is known as he “Little Switzerland of America”. The streets wind around the mountains and there is not a single cross street.
–The absence of cross streets is explained by the use of walkways and stairs between the roads which wind around the mountain. The hotel still exists in the same location and building.
This card was used and is dated 17 September 1971.

–Most of what can be seen here is likely for sale, including some of the furniture and light fixtures. It does not appear to still exist.
This card was used but the stamp was not cancelled and there is no date on the message. It likely dates from the 1950s.

San Fernando Tunnel, Newhall, California

This image shows the southern opening of the San Fernando Tunnel, which was cut through the Newhall Pass to allow trains direct access north to south through the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles.

672 – Entrance to San Fernando Tunnel, Valley Line, S.P.R.R.


There is no description on the back of this card. The sky portion is obscured by the message from the sender, who continued writing here after nearly filling the back completely except for the address box.
The tunnel was originally constructed for the Southern Pacific Railroad, but is now owned by the Union Pacific after the merger. The red objects behind the sign are cut lumber for the locomotive to use as fuel. Another view of the same image, without colorization, is available here.
This image likely dates to the 1900s, and while used and postmarked 17 July, there is no year on the stamp.

This image is a colored photo of the camp-like visitors cabins as they looked in the early part of the 20th Century on Catalina Island, off the coast of California near Los Angeles.
