–As noted in the linked article, the preservation and restoration of the Alamo was difficult and often contentious, with the state of Texas stepping in at various times to mediate between opposing parties.

Chinese Sunken Garden, Brackenridge Park, San Antonio, Texas

This image highlights the pavilion and some of the walkways around the aquatic park section of the Chinese Sunken Garden in Brackenridge Park. This is a large park in central San Antonio founded in 1899 from land donated by George Brackenridge.

Casa Rio Restaurant, San Antonio, Texas

This image shows the long standing landmark Casa Rio Restaurant, which opened in 1946, shortly after the end of World War Two and the completion of the River Walk. The owners were visionary enough to realize their greatest asset was the river, and made that the focus of their open-air dining.

Joske’s was a large department store in its own massive building in the center of the downtown commercial area. It was sold to Dillard’s in 1987, who changed the name, and in 2008 the Dillard’s closed.

Boating on the San Antonio River, San Antonio, Texas

This image shows one of the common pleasure boats that cruise along the river. There is also a business in river cruises, which commonly include larger boats with low overheads so they can pass under the many bridges.

Winding through the downtown area the river is lined with beautiful parkways and walks. It also affords pleasant boating.
–The river itself is normally quite green and muddy looking even though cleaned once a year.

San Antonio River Walk, San Antonio, Texas

This is another view of the River Walk, featuring the extensive plantings of native trees along the walkway. Originally, the walkway was on one side or the other of the river, but now commonly parallels the river on both sides.

–The River Walk has been modified and extended several times over the decades, and is now many miles longer, extending beyond the city core.
This postcard was used, and is dated August 2, 1962.

This image shows the river from one of the many bridges that cross it throughout the center of the city, highlighting the promenade, known as the River Walk, that allows walkers to stroll at the edge of the river in several sections.

–The walk is actively used by locals and visitors, since it proceeds along the river through the heart of the downtown commercial district. The original plan was started in 1938, continued through the war, and included about 3 miles of promenade.

Arneson River Theater Stage, San Antonio, Texas

This image is again of the Arneson River Theater, but from the bridge seen in the previous image looking down the river, with the stage to the left and terrace for spectators to the right.

This view better emphasizes the simplicity of the stage as normally viewed before props and backdrops are erected. On the right, the arrow points to the exit to La Villita, which is a four block long restored section of San Antonio now used as an artist’s colony and retail center for galleries and restaurants.

This image begins a series of views featuring the San Antonio River in San Antonio, Texas. The image shows the Arneson River Theater with open air amphitheater seating on the left, where chairs are set up, so that the audience can watch the performance on the stage at right, across the river.

A beautiful open air theatre, with the San Antonio River winding between the stage and the audience.
–The bridge in the background is also commonly used as an element in the performances. To the left of the bridge, at the end of the terraces, is a sign indicating the way to La Villita, a restored historical section of the old San Antonio, now mainly shops and restaurants.
