City Skyline, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Another view of the downtown skyline, this one likely at dusk with an extended exposure time, as indicated by the streaked taillights in the lower left. The buildings in the background are the same as the ones in the previous two views.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA
Beautiful skyline of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Oklahoma City is believed to be the largest city in area in the Nation.
–By this time, the 1960s, the claim to size was possibly still valid, but currently the largest city in the contiguous 48 states is Jacksonville, Florida, 147 square miles larger than Oklahoma City.
There are several Alaskan cities which are larger than either of the above, by virtue of their land area encompassing the entire county or regional boundaries. These cites are for the most part sparsely populated.

Main Street at Night, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Continuing with night views of Oklahoma City, this one features the nearby Main Street business district as it looks during the evening business hours. The buildings appear brilliantly lit because of the long exposure time, as revealed by the car headlights in the lower right.

Park Avenue, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

This postcard begins a week of views in the eponymous capital of Oklahoma. This particular view of Park Avenue shows the park and fountains and the three and a half block length of the road. Crossing just past the fountains is Latting Circle. It appears from the more current photo that there has been a clock installed at the edge of the fountain in more recent years.

Tulsa, Oklahoma

This folio collection of images and illustrations from Tulsa, Oklahoma have several examples of views that bear a striking resemblance to recent graphic representations in such computer games as the Sim City series. The images appear to be primarily artist’s renditions, with a few colored photos included.

All images by Oklahoma News Co., Tulsa, Okla.

While Tulsa continues to style itself the Oil Capital of the World, the many decades of changes in oil production world wide and even recently via tar sand development likely have made the claim moot.
This folio can be best dated by the illustrations which show automobiles consistent with the 1940s.

Glass House Restaurant, Oklahoma Turnpike

This is a nighttime photo of the restaurant built over the Will Rogers Turnpike at Vinita, OK. While this structure still exists, it changed ownership and names over the years, and was most recently a MacDonald’s. As of this writing, it is closed for renovation and is expected to reopen in 2014.

Davis Gun Collection, Claremore, Oklahoma

Today presents a folio of the amazing gun collection of J.M. Davis, who spent a lifetime selecting and displaying the tens of thousands of items shown below. Most notable is the fact that there are no duplicates in the collection, which covers several centuries of gun making history.
The collection is shown here in it’s late 1940’s location, the Mason Hotel in Claremore, OK, which Davis purchased both for the hotel itself and as the display venue for his growing collection. At this time, the collection was more than 15,000 items. Over time the collection outgrew even the numerous rooms and corridors of the hotel, and a new building was constructed specifically to house the collection: the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum. The hotel was later closed and has since been demolished.

The last image (from the back of the folio) is of the nearby memorial to Will Rogers, the actor, humorist, journalist and aviator of the early part of the century who was born and lived nearby.
These colorized photos date from the late 1940’s.
