International Tourist Train across the International Bridge

This image shows a tour ‘train’ driving along the roadway of the International Bridge connecting the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Canada at the Soo Locks.

The description states:
SOO TOUR TRAIN ON THE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE
An entertaining and educational trip through historic Sault Set. Marie, Michigan and crossing the International Bridge over the famous SOO LOCKS to Canada and back. The Trains are located in OLDTOWN across from the SOO LOCKS Information Center.
–Capitalization is in the original. The bridge runs alongside a railroad bridge which can be raised and lowered for ships to pass, and can be seen in the raised position at the left of the image.
This card was used and is dated 11 August 1977.

Highway Scene in Garden, Michigan

This image shows a country highway as it curves through the village of Garden, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the southern, Lake Michigan side.

These birch trees apparently hanging in mid-air are on a beautiful rock bluff along the main highway at Garden, Mich.
–The village of Garden has never been large, and population has decreased almost without breaks from a high in 1910.
This card is dated 1958.

Lake Scene, Upper Peninsula, Michigan

Legs Inn Entrance, Harbor Springs, Michigan

This image shows the front entrance of the Legs Inn, built by Stanley Smolak in the late 1920s.

This image likely dates from the 1960s. The building is much the same, but the central entrance has been closed in favor of the two side doorways.

C.W. Post Cereal Factories, Battle Creek, Michigan

This elevated image, taken from atop one of the Post Cereal factories, shows the extent of the Post Company presence in Battle Creek, Michigan at the time.
There is no description on the back of this card.
–The small sign on the building in the center of the image (click image to see larger version) states: It Makes Red Blood. In this time, processed cereal was touted as having many various health benefits, including improving blood quality and suppressing sexual appetite. It would be some time before boxed cereal would be considered primarily a children’s food.
This card was used and is dated 5 January 1912.

Library, Belding, Michigan

This image features the newly constructed Alvah N. Belding Library in the town of Belding, Michigan.
There is no description on the back of this card.
–As seen in the link above, the building still stands and is still in use as the city library. It was constructed in 1918 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
Given the pristine look of the grounds around the building, this image likely dates to the 1910s, shortly after the building was completed.

Methodist Church, Ithaca, Michigan

This image shows the Methodist Episcopal Church, as they were then called, located in Ithaca, Michigan.
There is no description on the back of this card.
The church is still active at the same location, now known as the Ithaca United Methodist Church, and the building still stands, expanded in size but retaining much of the original construction.
This postcard was used and is dated 7 August 1945.

Epworth Laboratory, Albion, Michigan

This image shows the recently built Epworth Physical Laboratory, on the campus of Albion College in Albion, Michigan.
There is no description on the back of this card.
This building was constructed in 1926 and still exists in almost original external appearance today, though it has found several different purposes over the past century. It is currently threatened with demolition.
This postcard was used and is dated 25 September 1923.

Michigan Home, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan

This image shows the Mt. Pleasant, Michigan Home and Training School, an institution for the developmentally disabled. Originally established in the late 19th century as a school for Native Americans, it closed in 1933 to reopen with its new purpose a year later.
There is no description on the back of this card.
The home was renamed the Mt. Pleasant Home and Training School in 1946, so the date of the postcard is most likely in the 1940s. The facility closed in 2008 due to budget shortfalls and declining attendance.

Pentwood Camp, Pentwater, Michigan

This is an image of a pair of simple campground cabins located in the lakeside community of Pentwater, Michigan.
There is no description on the back of this card.
–The cabins no doubt are long gone, as this appears to be a very informal development. The marking on the right building indicates where the sender’s family stayed during their visit.
The postcard was used but is not dated. However, the stamp used is from the wartime issues of the 1940s.
