Cave of the Mounds, Blue Mounds, Wisconsin

Now, after two weeks of images from the Cave of the Mounds in black and white, this folio shows many of the same locations, and more, with colored photos. The pictures are not simply the same photos colorized, but new photos taken of similar locations and with better lighting.

All images Curt Teich and Co., Chicago, U.S.A.

Several of the images above have legends to describe the locations, while others presumably allow your own imagination to identify the scene. A few can be identified from the images shown previously on this blog.
This folio was printed in 1951.

The Lake Superior Route, Ontario, Canada

This folio features a number of views along the scenic Highway 17 in Canada, which follows the Canadian shoreline of Lake Superior for nearly the entire distance. It is one major section of the Trans-Canada Highway, which runs from coast to coast in Canada. The map included also shows the US highways present along the southern shore.

The folio has no additional description beyond the map and the legends on the photos. Unlike most other photo collections, this one shows two industrial scenes as well as the more typical natural settings.
The cars in a few of the pictures indicate these photos date from the 1960s.

Parthenon Replica, Nashville, Tennessee

This folio highlights the central feature of Centennial Park in Nashville, Tennessee. The Parthenon replica is a faithful reconstruction of the original on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Because it is complete, it is possible to see and appreciate some of the features of the original which no longer exist.

While the Parthenon replica is the showpiece of Centennial Park, the park contains many more features and sites, as indicated by a few of the pictures here.
The photos from this folio date from the 1960s.

Door County, Wisconsin

This folio features locations primarily associated with water in the Door County, Wisconsin area. This county is in the northeast corner of Wisconsin made up of a long, narrow peninsula extending into Lake Michigan.

These photos are a combination of candid photos and those, like the beach scene above, where the people in the foreground are clearly aware of the photographer, though not formally posed. Earlier in the collection, the photo at the cave looks almost like a family snapshot.
The images are readily dated from the legend on the front. This collection dates from the 1950s.

Plimoth Plantation, Plymouth, Massachusetts

This folio shows some views of the historical site of the Pilgrim landing and settlement from the early 17th century. The spelling is correct as confirmed by the folio cover, since the spelling rules of that time were less well defined.

Performers re-enact several types of activity from the Pilgrim era on site for the visitor’s entertainment and education. As with many such recreations, only a best estimate of the activities and appearances are possible, and the more negative elements of these scenes are quietly overlooked.
The folio was used and is visibly postmarked 1966.

Chinatown, San Francisco, CA

This folio includes colorized photos and artworks depicting various people, events and locations in the Chinatown district of San Francisco, CA. In addition, there are a number of other notable sights included in the illustrations which are not associated with Chinatown.

The picture above numbered SF 38 – Chinatown Grant Avenue Looking North is an earlier version of the same view seen on this card from a previous posting. Here the building is the Cathay House, while the later card shows it to be the Wax Museum.
The city views from the Fairmont Hotel are now quite different. The Fairmont is surrounded by multi-story buildings, so any view of the bay or ocean would be unlikely now except from the highest floors.
The folio is not used and has no publication date, but the automobiles shown indicate it is from the 1940s.

Spanish Missions, California

This folio offers illustrations and colorized photos of several of the Spanish missions founded by Junipero Serra beginning in 1769.

There is damage to one pane of the folio, as the sheet was torn completely through, so the image was carefully aligned before scanning to minimize the effect of the damage.
These pictures do not represent the missions as they appear today, except accidentally. Most now have been restored far beyond their appearance here, most obviously the San Carlos Borromeo which is no longer a free-standing church. Mission Dolores is now completely surrounded by urban construction in the midst of San Francisco, as is true of many of these other missions located in what became large cities in the latter half of the 20th century.
The more rural mission buildings are reduced in number and complexity, but the main church structures are still much as they appear in these photos allowing for restoration and reconstruction of ancillary buildings.
This folio is not dated, but it was used and bears a stamp. Unfortunately, the cancellation does not reveal a date and did not have one when made. An estimate can be made from the time the stamp was issued and used, as well as the address where the recipient lived.
The stamp is an engraved version of the 1 cent issue of 1912. These continued to be made until after the First World War. The C.A. Jacokes alive at that time would have been a teenaged boy by the end of the war. Thus, it is likely this folio dates from the 1920s.

Rochester, Minnesota “A World Famed City”

This folio includes city view of Rochester, MN, emphasizing the many significant buildings and organizations located there.

It is not clear what organization the Junior High Barber Shop is, but it no longer exists at the location indicated on the folio. Probably just an evocative name, as there is no indication that there was a Junior High school nearby.
As can be seen on the front of the folio, this was mailed in 1946, establishing the date the folio was likely published.
