Cypress trees, powder-fine white sand, views of Point Lobos and Pebble Beach make this Pacific Ocean beach one of the most beautiful on the California coast.
–As mentioned above, Point Lobos is a state park, considered the jewel of the park system. Pebble Beach is a section of Del Monte Forest, most famous for the golf course of the same name which runs along the coast line.

Mission San Carlos Borromeo, Carmel, California

MISSION SAN CARLOS BORROMEO, Carmel, California. Established June 3, 1770, San Carlos is one of the oldest yet one of the best preserved of the Missions. At the foot of its High Altar rest the remains of Padre Junipero Serra.
–Serra founded the California mission chain that reaches from north of San Francisco to south of San Diego, and made this mission the headquarters and his resting place. The construction of the mission facade is asymmetrical, which was common in this era, even to the point of the large window above the door being rotated a few inches from vertical.
The grounds and building have changed very little over the decades since the mission was restored. This image likely dates from the 1950s.

Carmel with its colony of artists and writers is a quaint crossroads of the art world. The business buildings along the streets are built to suit the individual taste of each owner.
–Two notable characteristics of Carmel: the buildings are all custom construction, and none have street numbers. All mail for the central village is picked up by the recipients at the post office in the center of town. To find a place when you visit, you must know the closest cross street and look for your destination along the block as you pass by.

Tuck Box Shop, Carmel, California

–Carmel-by-the-Sea was a small town when this image was produced and remains a small town today. It’s location on a steep hill leading down to the Pacific Ocean at Carmel Beach make it both a shopping destination and a vacation spot.
The name used here, The Tuck Box, was first used in the early 1940s, so this image likely dates from that time.

Martinez-Benicia Bridge over Suisun Bay, California

This image shows the exceptionally long railroad bridge across Suisun Bay, just east of San Francisco Bay, connecting the cities of Martinez on the south side and Benicia on the north.

The description states:
MARTINEZ BENICIA BRIDGE
Southern Pacific’s new $12,000,000 bridge. One of the largest railroad bridges in the world across Suisun Bay, over which your train runs between Martinez and Benicia. This bridge the historic ‘train ferries’ between Port Costa and Benicia.
This bridge still exists in this location, and has been joined on both sides by automobile bridges which cross the Carquinez Strait. It is now operated by the Union Pacific and shares trackage rights with Amtrak passenger trains.
The bridge was completed in 1930. This postcard was used, and is dated 20 July 1937.

1616–FISHING FLEET, SAN FRANCISCO,  CALIF.
San Francisco has a large commercial fishing fleet which makes Fisherman’s Wharf its home harbor. Here the bright painted boats and sun-browned fishermen are reminiscent of an Old World Port.
This area around Fisherman’s Wharf has remained much the same over the decades, as evidenced by the continuing presence of both the restaurants visible in the background. This picture appears to be taken from the windows of the Castagnola’s Restaurant.
