“A Drink of Water” by L. H. ‘Dude’ Larsen

This image is a reproduction of the painting by the prolific Western artist known as Dude Larsen,  who created postcards for the tourist trade along U. S. 66.

Taken form an original oil painting by the noted cowboy artist and poet, L. H. “Dude” Larsen.
Dude Larsen worked during the 1930s and 1940s making postcards from original paintings such as this one.
This postcard is dated 1939.

Appaloosa Stallion “Charlie’s Pride”, Cascade, Colorado

This is a painting of an award-winning horse named Charlie’s Pride raised on a ranch in Cascade, Colorado.

The description states:

GRAND CHAMPION APPALOOSA STALLION —
“Charlie’s Pride” owned by the Appaloosa Four Bit Ranch of Cascade, Colorado. The Appaloosas are booming well known throughout the west for their Conformation, Color and Ability.
The painting is by Western Artist Darol Dickinson of Calhan, Colorado.
— A basic search for the ranch does not show any current indications it still exists.
The Appaloosa is distinctive for its coloring as clearly shown in the painting. Some examples are completely covered in spots, though spotted hindquarters are more common. The word appaloosa is derived from the region where these horses were first common, the Palouse, where they were called ‘a palouse horse”.
This particular coloring pattern is known as ‘blanket with spots’. 
One website indicates that this horse was born in 1958, so this image likely dates from a few years after that.

16th Street Business District, Cheyenne, Wyoming

The description states:
Sixteenth Street is the main cross business street of Cheyenne as well as the route of the Lincoln Highway thru the city. Cheyenne with its miles of paved streets and its numerous large business and public buildings has all the appearances of a city of 50,000 although its population is less than half that.
–The Plains Hotel continues in business to the present, now registered as a National Historic Landmark. The Lincoln Highway has been relocated to bypass the city and is now known as Interstate 80. The street labelled 16th on this card is now Lincolnway.
The cars shown in this illustration indicate that this image dates from the 1940s.

Capitol Building Nighttime, Cheyenne, Wyoming

This image of the Wyoming State Capitol building is shown from an angled point of view from the front of the building as it might look at night.

The description states:
The Capitol is one of the most beautiful buildings of the city, of classical design, and a great dome, 146 feet above the ground. It occupies a full block of ground covered with trees and shrubs.
The building is currently closed for remodeling and will reopen in 2019.
This card was used and is dated 16 June 1955

Capitol Building, Cheyenne, Wyoming

–The building was constructed over four years, and was started before Wyoming was admitted as a state.
This card was used and is dated 3 July 1948.

American Bison, Oklahoma

–The bison roamed over much of North America until its migration routes began to be crossed by the railroad. Unrestricted slaughter of the bison nearly drove it to extinction, but the numbers have recovered after protections were put in place and refuges established.

State Capitol Building, Lincoln, Nebraska

–The building was completed in 1932 from Indiana limestone and the tower is 400 feet high.
This card likely dates from the 1930s.

Dam, Locks and Ford Bridge, Minneapolis, Minnesota

GOVERNMENT DAM AND LOCKS AND FORD BRIDGE, MINNEAPOLIS MINN.
Through these locks pass the Mississippi river boats and barges laden with coal, oil and industrial machinery. The head of navigation is at Minneapolis Municipal Dock at Washington Ave. South.
CITY OF LAKES AND PARKS
–The dam was originally built and owned by the Ford Motor Company and are now known as Lock and Dam Number 1. The Ford Bridge in the background is now known as the Intercity Bridge and carried 46th Street between Minneapolis and St. Paul.

–The Cappelen Memorial Bridge was constructed in 1923. At the time of its completion, the bridge’s central span was the longest concrete arch in the world.

MINNEHAHA FALLS
This famous falls, immortalized in Longfellow’s “Hiawatha”, is one of the many beauty spots of Minneapolis, city of lakes and parks.
Minneapolis is separated from the city of Saint Paul by the Mississippi River, similar to the way the Danube separates the cities of Buda and Pest in Hungary.
