Charlies Bunion, Great Smoky Mountains Park, Tennessee

This is an image of the large rock outcrop called Charlies Bunion. The rock is just below the summit of a mountain along the Appalachian Trail.

This spectacular point on the Appalachian Trail is located about 6 miles from Newfound Gap and has become a very popular hike. This area is located in the most rugged scenery in the Smokies.
–This particular mountain top is on the border between Tennessee and North Carolina.
This card was used and is dated 15 September 1971.
 

Fort Nashborough, Tennessee

This is an image of Fort Nashborough, a stockade fort which would be the focal point of settlers who would found Nashville, Tennessee.

The description states:
FORT NASHBOROUGH
Nashville, Tennessee
This replica of Fort Nashborough is a faithful reproduction of the original log fort build in 1780 on the banks of the Cumberland River. Built on the same site, the block houses and stockade appear as they did in the day when the Fort withstood the savage attacks of the Cherokees and Creeks.
–The purpose of the fort was to defend the encroaching European settlers against attacks by the Cherokee indian tribes which were resisting settlement in the area.
The current structures were built in the 1960s, but have become decrepit and are slated for demolition and reconstruction in 2017.
This postcard was used and is dated 21 July 1971.

–This card is dated 1972.

Highway 1, California

This is an image of the world famous Pacific Coast Highway, which winds along the shoreline of California for most of the state’s length. As a result, the scenery of the coastal hills, forests and ocean are experienced almost non-stop.

CALIFORNIA COAST HIGHWAY 1
Rugged shoreline in the Lime Kiln area south of Carmel and Big Sur.
–The Lime Kiln State Park is along the central California coast, south of the population center of the Monterey Bay, and even south of the state park at Big Sur. It is 56 miles south of Carmel, and 2 miles south of Lucia.

This card was used and is dated 14 June 1979.

Fisherman’s Wharf, Middle Section, Monterey, California

This image has proceeded down the wharf towards the small white entrance on the right, previously seen in the middle distance. On both sides of the walkway are open air fresh fish markets, as well as a local candy store.

is a tourist center with numerous good restaurants, gift shops and headquarters for charter fishing boats.
–The list on the building shows the range of fish available to the visitor for purchase, though likely not all at the same time.

Medicine Bow Peak, Wyoming

As indicated in the picture, this is a view of Medicine Bow Peak, the highest point in the Snowy Range west of Laramie, Wyoming.

Mission San Juan Bautista Altar

This image shows the extraordinary width of the chapel at San Juan Bautista as well as the monumental altar structure and painted arches.

Founded 1797, San Juan Bautista, California
This is the largest California Mission church, and by many considered the most beautiful. Original painting hear pictured was done by the first American who, in 1816, settled in California — Thomas W. Doak, a sailor from Boston. With the help of the indians and their paints he created this superb artistic effect.
–This postcard most likely dates from the 1970s.

Mission San Juan Bautista, California

This begins a two week showing of several more missions in the original chain founded in the 18th Century by Father Junipero Serra and others. This specific image is of the convento wing of the Mission San Juan Bautista (Baptist) quadrangle and the main church building in the distance. The rest of the quadrangle was demolished or destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, but there are hopes to restore it now the foundations have been determined.

Other missions are restored, but what is here is original. This is the largest of all Mission churches, and the only one built with three aisles. Other buildings facing the old Spanish Plaza and contemporary with the mission are preserved separately as a State Historical Monument.
–This postcard most likely dates from the 1970s.

Main Bar, Legs Inn, Cross Village, Michigan

The final view of the Legs Inn is a 90 degree rotation from the previous view, showing the main bar with the operator and his son tending. This image shows how extensive the woodwork is throughout the structure, including both structural details as well as functional and decorative ones, including the tables and benches for the guests.
