The Barnyard Shopping Center, Carmel Valley, California

This image shows a couple of the unusual buildings used to house the shopping center known as The Barnyard at the mouth of the Carmel Valley in California.

The description states:
THE BARNYARD — CARMEL, CA
Consists of seven restaurants with outdoor dining, fifty shops and craft studios, a live theatre and a two hour photo finishing service. Located off Hwy. 1 between Carmel Valley Rd. and Rio Road. Enter from Carmel Rancho Blvd. Tel. (408)624-8886.
–The center was built in 1976 and is still there in this form, but the buildings have all been painted instead of being allowed to show their age as grey wood buildings. The theatre is gone as is the photo finishing service, and just about every business has been replaced with others.

–The location is not specified, but the message on the back of the card implies it is Mobile, Alabama.
This card was used and is dated 2 August 1971.

Polynesian Cultural Center, Laie, Hawaii

This image shows the Polynesian Cultural Center theme park and living museum located on the north shore of the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

POLYNESIAN CULTURAL CENTER, LAIE, OAHU
This aerial photograph also shows a portion of the Church College of Hawaii’s campus and athletic fields.
–The facility was opened in 1973 and is operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). The Church College has been renamed Brigham Young University – Hawaii.
This card was used and is dated 11 September 1973.

–The last statement in Hawaiian translates to: The printing house Ala Moana center.
The Ala Moana Center is still a landmark in the city.

International Tourist Train across the International Bridge

This image shows a tour ‘train’ driving along the roadway of the International Bridge connecting the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Canada at the Soo Locks.

SOO TOUR TRAIN ON THE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE
An entertaining and educational trip through historic Sault Set. Marie, Michigan and crossing the International Bridge over the famous SOO LOCKS to Canada and back. The Trains are located in OLDTOWN across from the SOO LOCKS Information Center.
–Capitalization is in the original. The bridge runs alongside a railroad bridge which can be raised and lowered for ships to pass, and can be seen in the raised position at the left of the image.

Holiday Inn North, Des Moines, Iowa

–The small lettering on the sign in the lower left says “The Worlds Innkeeper”
The Holiday Inn chain of motels is one of the largest in the world, and a pioneer in technology and co-branding, including creating a reservation service for travelers to book another Holiday Inn when leaving the current one, and the ability to pay with a Gulf Oil credit card, as Holiday Inn did not otherwise have a credit payment system, and this was before BankAmericard (now VISA) and Mastercharge (now MasterCard).
The Holiday Inn has been demolished and replaced with a Casey’s Service Station. This postcard likely dates from the 1970s.

A BOSS MOTEL
–Some of the notations in the description are unclear. The AHA may refer to a hotel association of the time. TWX is the Teletypewriter Exchange Service which ran alongside the public telephone service and allowed telegraph like messages to be sent to businesses.
Of particular note from the image are the unusual bed designs. These are beds with mattress covers and bolster pillows intended to provide couch space in the daytime. At night, the bolsters were set aside, the covers removed, and the beds exposed for sleeping. Normal sleeping pillows were stored in closets.
This style of furniture was fashionable for a short time in the 1970s, and this image likely dates from that time.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas

VIEW OF THE BASIN PARK HOTEL AND DOWNTOWN EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSAS
Built into the side of a mountain, this unique hotel has a ground-level exit from every floor. Eureka Springs is known as he “Little Switzerland of America”. The streets wind around the mountains and there is not a single cross street.
–The absence of cross streets is explained by the use of walkways and stairs between the roads which wind around the mountain. The hotel still exists in the same location and building.

— This motel still stands in its original configuration and location, as seen on the Gateway Lodge website. Unlike other older establishments, this one appears to have prospered and the rooms are modernized.
This image likely dates from the 1970s.

Purple Rhododendron, Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

Originally known as the Appalachian Scenic Highway during its construction, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a linear park connecting other National Parks in the system, while not being a national park itself. It is the most visited unit of the National Park system.

PURPLE RHODODENDRON in bloom on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Craggy Dome in the background.
–Craggy Dome is the highest point in the Great Craggy Mountains of North Carolina. It is the smoother of the two prominences in this picture.
