Presidential Mountain Range, Vermont

This image is taken from a tourist stop in the White Mountain Region of New Hampshire. The Presidential Range is so called because several have been named for U.S. Presidents of the latter 19th and early 20th centuries.

— The peaks are actually part of the Green Mountain Range in Vermont, though viewable from the White Mountain range and park near the border in New Hampshire

This image follows on from the previous one, from a vantage point on the ground instead of elevated as before. The same Harbor House entrance is visible on the left, and the edge of the Tarantino’s sign on the right.

FISHERMAN’S WHARF – MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA
Entrance to one of Monterey’s most popular and interesting attractions. A quiet and colorful cluster of fine seafood restaurants, fresh fish stalls, and numerous souvenir shops. Here bases the commercial and sport fishing fleet and playful sea lions cavort around the pilings.
–Clothing  in this era is considerably more formal for the visitor, as there are men and boys in suits, women in fancy dresses, and only a few dressed in more casual styles. This image likely dates from the 1960s.

This image shows an elevated view of the pedestrian entrance to the public wharf, known as Fisherman’s Wharf, In Monterey, Calfornia. The view extends almost to the end of the wharf.

The description states:
FISHERMAN’S WHARF
Monterey, California
This picturesque old wharf is a must for the Monterey Peninsula visitor. Here are many gift shops, markets, restaurants, fishing party boards, a wharf theatre and the Wharf Aquarium with pet seals and sea lions.
–The wharf was originally intended for both auto and pedestrian traffic, as indicated by the paved road down the middle of the wharf. Tourist activity increased to the point where autos became a liability and were prohibited during normal business hours, as indicated on the white sign on the right of the entrance.
Many of the buildings have changed ownership, but the Harbor House on the left is still operating as a gift shop, the theatre is still active, but the Aquarium has long been closed.
This card likely dates from the 1960s.

Grant House Kitchen, Galena, Illinois

This image shows the kitchen of the Grant home where he and the family lived between the end of the Civil War and his election to the Presidency in 1868.

The description states:
KITCHEN, GENERAL U. S. GRANT HOME
GALENA, ILLINOIS
This room is furnished with typical furnishings of the 1865 period. The stove, table and four chairs are original furniture used by the Grant family.
–Note that there is no running water, as evidenced by the presence of the porcelain pitcher and washbasin in the left background, and the absence of plumbing fixtures over the wood framed sink in the center background. The railing again is installed to control visitor movement in the museum.

This image shows the cosy parlor of the large house where Grant lived for a few years after the conclusion of the Civil War.

PARLOR, GENERAL U. S. GRANT HOME
GALENA, ILLINOIS
This room has the original horsehair-covered, walnut furniture that was in the home when given to the Grant family in 1865. The vases on the mantel were a gift to the General, while on his world tour, and are Bohemian glass. This home is now a state memorial and is open to the public daily. Admission free.
–The railing visible is a museum addition to keep visitors from encroaching on the carpets and furniture.

This home, considerably more substantial and elaborate, was a gift to the General and his family upon the successful conclusion of the war.

The description states:
HOME OF GENERAL U. S. GRANT
GALENA, ILLINOIS
This home was built in 1857 by Alexander Jackson. Eight years later it was purchased by the City of Galena, furnished and presented to General U. S. Grant on his return from the Civil War. In 1904 the heirs of the Grant estate deeded it to the City as a memorial to their father. In 1932 it became a state memorial and is open to the public daily. Admission Free.
–The family remained here briefly, moving to Washington DC after Grant’s election to the Presidency in 1868.
This postcard was used and is dated 26 April 1963.

This modest structure was the home of the famous Civil War Army Commander, Ulysses S. Grant, before his rise to fame. He and his family occupied it until the end of the war.

GALENA, ILLINOIS
GRANT’S PRE-WAR HOME. Captain U.S. Grant left this home to answer the call of his country in 1861. His wife and children waited here for his return.
–The family was of very modest means during this time before the war This house was rented by the Grant family. It has since had it’s porch removed.
This postcard likely dates from the 1960s.

This image shows some high-kicking dancers, a piano player and a hostess who make up part of the Crystal Palace Revue, a re-enactment of musical entertainment from the 19th Century.

You’ll be treated to  high-kicking can-can girls twice nightly all summer at Front Street’s famous Crystal Palace Saloon. These family shows with a true western flavor are attended by thousands each summer from every state in the Union and many foreign countries.
–This show apparently also includes a gun fight in its current incarnation. This card likely dates from the 1960s.

This image shows a small group of performers at the historical attraction in Ogallala, Nebraska. It is a recreation of a pioneer western town typical of the region, with re-enactors presenting activities and entertainment from that time.

FRONT STREET
Ogallala, Nebraska
Ogallala became Nebraska’s “Cowboy Capitol” when it was the end of the Texas Trail Drives from 1875-1885. Today that colorful history lives on at “Front Street”. This western attraction includes a Cowboy Historical Museum, Stage Coach Rides, and the famous Crystal Palace Revue, Nebraska’s only Summer Stock Theatre.
–The Front Street attraction was built along the street which provided the throughway for old U.S. 30, and thus had many people driving by. When the Interstate became more popular, fewer cars went directly past, and attendance dropped. In 2013, the attraction was auctioned, but there were no bidders. It remains for sale today.
