St. Audrie’s Bay, England

This image shows a collection of holiday visitors and swimmers gathered near the access to the beach at St. Audrie’s Bay in West Somerset, England.
There is no description on the back of this card.
The location is now better known as West Quantoxhead. The town has been in existence since before the Norman Conquest. The name St. Audrey’s comes from a nearby parish church and manor house.
This postcard was used and is dated 13 August 1953.

Canadian Lock, Sault Ste. Marie, Canada

The description states:
THE CANADIAN LOCK
As seen from the observation deck of the Diesel operated vessel “Messenger”. Opened in 1895 by the Dominion of Canada, the Canadian Lock is 900 feet long, 60 feet wide, 17 feet deep with a lift of 22 feet. Cost $2,500,000. A majority of the passenger boats use this lock.
–The lock has been deactivated and is part of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal Historic District. At its construction, it was the first electrically operated lock in the world.

–Since this postcard was used, and mailed in Riverside, California, it is believed this body of water is somewhere near there.
This card is dated 15 Jul 1953.

Los Angeles, California
A vital link in Los Angeles’ rapid expansion. Beautiful snow-capped mountains in distance.
–Given their height and size, the mountains are most likely the San Gabriel Mountains, which form the northern border of the Los Angeles basin.
It is difficult to identify this particular highway designation, as it was undoubtedly replaced when the Interstate system was completed.
The cars visible here indicate this image dates from the 1950s.

Santa Barbara Coastline, California

This image is a low aerial view of the highway that passes through Santa Barbara, California, following the Pacific coast.

Reminiscent of the French Riviera in U. S. Highway 101 entering Montecito with its extensive private parks and gardens. Santa Barbara nestles in the background.
–The city of Montecito is just a short distance east of the Biltmore Hotel featured in the previous posting. It is considered one of the wealthiest communities in the nation.

–The Biltmore still exists in the same location, but is known as the Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore. It is located fairly far east of the center of town, past the Clark Estate and the Zoo.

–The description states Los Angeles, but the market is in Hollywood. This image shows that while the stalls are covered, they are still open to the weather, particularly here where a tree is allowed to flourish among the businesses.
This card was used and is dated 23 June 1955.

Luscious domestic and tropical fruits in a riot of color are only one of the many fascinating sights in the famous Farmers Market. Many delicious edibles are flown in daily from the Islands of the Pacific.
–As noted in the description, some of the produce sold in the Farmers Market was imported from across the Pacific, probably primarily from Hawaii, which was not a state at the time.

–At this time there were over 80 such stalls for vendors, and the establishment continues in the same location today.
The basket to the right of the shopper is not a wastebasket, but a shopping cart for transporting her purchases to her car or other transport.
