The description states:
239–CARMEL, CALIFORNIA
Carmel with its colony of artists and writers is a quaint crossroads of the art world. The business buildings along the streets are built to suit the individual taste of each owner.
–Two notable characteristics of Carmel: the buildings are all custom construction, and none have street numbers. All mail for the central village is picked up by the recipients at the post office in the center of town. To find a place when you visit, you must know the closest cross street and look for your destination along the block as you pass by.

San Francisco has a large commercial fishing fleet which makes Fisherman’s Wharf its home harbor. Here the bright painted boats and sun-browned fishermen are reminiscent of an Old World Port.
—This area around Fisherman’s Wharf has remained much the same over the decades, as evidenced by the continuing presence of both the restaurants visible in the background. This picture appears to be taken from the windows of the Castagnola’s Restaurant.

Its many facilities include restaurant, coffee shop, newsstand, book shop, souvenier [sic] and gift shops.
–The two planes in the image are both propeller driven aircraft common in that era. The one on the left is most likely a Lockheed Constellation, based on its unusual three part tail design. In addition, the planes visible are all propellor driven, indicating this image is from the 1950s.
