Gardner Log Cabin, Arnold’s Park, Iowa

As mentioned in an earlier blog post, this is the cabin of the sole survivor of the Indian attack on a white settlement in Iowa, know as the Spirit Lake Massacre of 1857. The woman standing in front of the cabin is a re-enactor, providing interpretation of the event for visitors.

Only house left of the massacre of 1857 @ Gardner Log Cabin, Arnold’s Park, IA. C801

There is no description on the back of the card.
The cabin was extensively modified over the years once the original owner returned and used it as a tourist site. A new door and window were installed on the first floor, and a whole new second floor was added, as seen here.
Once the house was given to the state of Iowa as a historic site, the conservators decided to return it to the original appearance during the time of the massacre. The completed restoration is visible here.
The image likely dates from the 1930s.

Public Library, Knoxville, Iowa

This image shows the front entry to the apparently newly constructed Public Library building in Knoxville, Iowa.
There is no description on the back of the card.
This building was constructed in 1912 from funds donated by Andrew Carnegie, and still stands today in the same condition, but was expanded in 1988.
This image likely dates from the 1930s.

Iowa Training School for Boys, Eldora, Iowa

This image shows the road which passes the Iowa Training School for Boys, a reform school for what were then termed ‘juvenile delinquents’ located just west of Eldora, Iowa.
There is no description on the back of the card.
Such ‘reform schools’ were established throughout the country during this period, with the growth of social services and the development of therapeutic programs for children who had criminal records.
This image is likely from the 1930s.

High Bridge, Eldora, Iowa

This image shows a newly constructed roadway bridge which appears to replace an older dirt and gravel route shown in the foreground.
There is no description on the back of the card.
Such construction was a matter of pride and prestige in the 1930’s due to the constraints of the Great Depression in the United States. Such bridges as this allowed much more convenient, safe and speedy travel in rural areas which were still largely served with gravel roads.
This picture likely dates to the 1930s.

Pine Lake State Park Bridge, Eldora, Iowa

This image shows a gravel road as it crosses a water connection between Upper and Lower Pine Lake in Eldora, Iowa.
There is no description on the back of this card.
The picture is not particularly scenic, but typical of postcard photographs of this era. Often photographers would attempt to document recent developments and construction projects in a park rather than the natural appearance as a way to entice tourists to visit.
This picture likely dates from the 1930s.

Lower Pine Lake Dam and Bridge, Eldora, Iowa

This image shows one of the dams that form the lakes making up Pine Lake State Park in Iowa. This is obviously Lower Pine Lake dam, as it has a road passing over it, and Upper Pine Lake dam has only a trail.
There is no description on the back of this card.
The dam no longer has this appearance. Though built in 1922, it was modernized and the design significantly changed in 1991. However, the roadway remains in the same location. This image likely dates from the 1930s.

Upper Pine Lake, Eldora, Iowa

This image shows the lake nearby the previous posting, Upper Pine Lake, which is a short distance from Eldora, Iowa. It is upstream from Lower Pine Lake and also formed by a dam.
There is no description on the back of this card.
This dam for this lake was constructed in 1934 and modified in 1990. This image likely dates from the 1930s.

Pine Lake State Park Island, Eldora, Iowa

This image starts a series of older black and white photos of Pine Lake State Park, located near Eldora, Iowa.
There is no description on the back of this card. This is apparently an image of Lower Pine Lake, with a boater in the middle of the lake and another just behind, near the island. The lake was formed by a dam constructed in 1922.
This image likely dates from the 1930s.

Legendary Rock, Lake Pepin, Wisconsin

The rock outcrop in the right background of this photo is identified by the local populace as Legendary Rock.
There is no description on the back of the card.
Legendary Rock is not identifiable today, so it may no longer be known by that name. Maiden Rock is located somewhat north of Pepin, Wisconsin along Lake Pepin, which is part of the Mississippi River and forms part of the boundary between Wisconsin and Minnesota.
This card likely dates from the 1930s.

Car on Highway 35 near Pepin, Wisconsin

This is another image of state Highway 35 near Pepin, Wisconsin. The highway passes through the town along the Mississippi shoreline.
There is no description on the back of the card.
There are a lot of objects stacked in the fields on either side of the highway and in the background behind the car. These appear to be corn stacks, which are bundles of corn stalks gathered into a standing stack for further processing. This shows the picture was taken in late summer or early fall during the corn harvest.
The car in the picture indicates this image is from the 1930s.
