–The Carmel referenced in the text is officially known as Carmel-by-the-Sea, itself a very picturesque and popular tourist attraction. Point Lobos is known as the “Pearl of the California Park System.”

–Compare this view to the previous posting and you will see the Cathay House again, now viewed from California Street instead of Grant. The church in the background is the Old St. Mary’s Cathedral and Chinese Mission. This view is towards Market and downtown.

This image, taken from an aircraft, shows the large marina complex and nearby high-rise buildings of Waikiki, and in the distant background, the dormant Diamond Head volcano, both icons of the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
The caption states: Many new apartments and hotels line the scenic byways through Waikiki as shown in the aerial photograph covering and area all the way from Honolulu Yacht Harbor to the blue Pacific ocean beyond Diamond Head.
This image is of the famous road along the shore in Monterey where many of the sardine canneries were housed, and which came to be called Cannery Row.
The caption states: CANNERY ROW Monterey, California Famous Cannery Row with its many Gift and Souvenir Shops, fine Restaurants and the Steinbeck Theatre, is located on the Bay side just to the north of Fisherman’s Wharf.
–The capitalization is in the original. There are no canneries any more on the Row, and even most of the cannery buildings have long since been demolished and replaced. There are still several historic buildings on the Row, including parts of a former cannery complex.

This is an image of a tree which has self-seeded within the folds of a rock and succeeded in growing to early maturity in the normally inhospitable ground. The tree is near the town of Buford, Wyoming
The caption on the back states: No. 5402 – Tree growing out of solid rock along the Lincoln Highway (U.S. 30) on Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming.
The tree, identified as a Limber Pine, was apparently first approached in 1867 when the railroad was built to bypass it, and since then Highway 30 and now Interstate 80 pass by the site, which has been preserved and can be visited from Interstate 80 at a small rest stop.
