The description states:
239–CARMEL, CALIFORNIA
Carmel with its colony of artists and writers is a quaint crossroads of the art world. The business buildings along the streets are built to suit the individual taste of each owner.
–Two notable characteristics of Carmel: the buildings are all custom construction, and none have street numbers. All mail for the central village is picked up by the recipients at the post office in the center of town. To find a place when you visit, you must know the closest cross street and look for your destination along the block as you pass by.
This image likely dates from the 1950s.
