Houghton Monument, Eagle River, Michigan

This image shows the plaque and associated stand which honors the work of Michigan’s foremost geologist, Douglass Houghton.

The description states:

MONUMENT OF DOUGLASS HOUGHTON

MICHIGANS FIRST STATE GEOLOGIST

Drowned off shore at Lake Superior, Oct. 13, 1845. Monument location on Lake Shore Scenic Drive M26 at Eagle River, Michigan.

–Houghton was killed in bad weather during a geological survey of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when his small boat capsized.

This card likely dates from the 1950s.
