This image shows the town of Zermatt, Switzerland, and in the background the world-famous and iconic Matterhorn. The mountain straddles the boundary between Switzerland and Italy.

The description states simply:

Matterhorn – Mt. Cervin 4478 m

–The mountain has three names, in German and French as shown here, and it is similarly called Monte Cervino in Italian. The first summit of the Matterhorn in 1865 was initially successful, but ended in tragedy.

This postcard was used and is dated 21 June 1968.

The glacier known as Rhoneglacier has retreated dramatically in current times, and only the top most part of the glacier shown here is still present, and much smaller. The rest of the mountain beneath the glacier is barren and exposed rock.
